about this mix

The DELTA ISOS mix tries to look at the final stage of flow, diversification and erosion. What are the differences in our own personal perception of the world, compared to how those next to us experience the same circumstances? Which of those differences are only manifest in our own perceived reality? Erosion as a natural process and a necessary element for progress becomes a symbol, not for decay, but birth of a new chapter.

This last year was a time for reflection. Meanings, causes and effects became clearer, conversion became a possibility. Chaos slowed down and allowed glimpses of how it might be possible to bring dividing elements together in the future. Isos, the stream runs unimpeded, where it leads in its final stages is open and while we cannot control the delta, we can learn that evolution needs diversity and an open end.

As abstract as these musings might sound, thinking about these themes and soundtracking my thoughts with the music of the great artists featured in this mix has helped me a great deal to feel more centered and accomplished despite the great uncertainties of our age. I‘m trying to understand nature‘s language a little better, to find a way to deal with the fear and pain and the apparent meaninglessness of my own existence and the happenings around me, in view of the greater picture of time and space as a whole.

For me it is a privilege to be able to record the agemoworos mixes and share them, it’s a personal therapy and a learning curve, a diary of sorts. I hope that what you will take away from listening to this mix, amongst all other things you might find in here, is a feeling that turning towards each other and recognizing and accepting our differences is affirmative and facilitating on our way through our individual perceived realities.

The DELTA ISOS mix is in large parts a direct follow up to the agemoworos mix tape II: THE REVERSE END. Most tracks have been released in the last twelve months following the release of THE REVERSE END, it chronicles my music listening during the last year, a time of lockdowns and a lot of isolation.

Apart from buying lots of new music during this last year (find a buy music club purchase list related to this mix below), i spent a lot of time going back to the early eighties, when i first discovered experimental music on labels like L.A.Y.L.A.H. Antirecords, A-Mission Records or Nekrophile Rekords (a vinyl box and new book about Nekrophile Rekords will be released early 2022). As a result there are several tracks from 1983 included in this mix as well as tracks from bands i discovered in/after 1983 like Zero Kama, The Hafler Trio, Coil or Metgumbnerbone, all this music still fascinates me almost fourty years later.

ZOE DEWITT – NEKROPHILE RECORDS (1983 – 1990)
Vinyl On Demand Records / Edition Ananael, 2022

At the beginning of 2020 The Hafler Trio rereleased a triple rework album originally created for Fovea Hex’s Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent project, a three part set that was released from 2005 to 2007 and contained three The Hafler Trio reworks as bonus CDs in the first editions. In 2020 made un-catatonic and resurrected as the high quality digital release This is Our Problem: What Will Our Joy Be Then? An exceptional listening experience. The track The Explanation. is used as a building block element over nearly 20 minutes at the end of the first half of this mix.

The second half of the DELTA ISOS mix tape begins with a new work from Patrick Gräser and Jan Wagner on the new DEFTR label. Silent is taken from the first of several EPs they produced together, the Yes I EP is currently only available digitally, with a vinyl release planned for the future:

It’s always important for me to include a couple of vocal tracks in my mixes that transport some of the sentiment of the overall mix in a particular vocal performance, you’ll hear vocals by Alison Skidmore on the Andy Stott track or Lucy Gooch performing with Zakè & Marine Eyes, but my favourite from last year has to be the shoegaze Awakened Souls version of Guide Me Home from the bonus remix CD of The Other Side Of Darkness by 36 & Awakened Souls, one of my personal top ten albums this year, here you can listen to the full expanded beauty of it:

As for the new music included here you’ll notice for example three tracks from the label Castles In Space included in the mix, for me it’s one of the best labels of the year, they released several wonderful albums, often with amazing artworks, beautifully produced, high quality vinyl pressings. I picked tracks from The New Obsolecents, Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan and Dohnavùr. I recommend checking out what else Castles In Space have on offer if you are not yet familiar with the label.

Castles In Space

Widely overlooked in my opinion are two releases from BNJMN as Body Portals. I have been following BNJMN’s music for ten years and was pleasantly surprised to find these productions released under the new project name Body Portals. These tracks are much more industrial influenced compared to his other productions on labels like Rush Hour, Delsin and Tresor and i really like them:

2021 also saw the rerelease of my favourite Caterina Barbieri album Vertical, now available again on tape from Important Records and digitally from bandcamp. Vertical is Caterina’s debut album (2014), a majestic Drone work, really pure, minimalistic, immersive sound, composed for vocals and Buchla 200 modular synthesizer. The track Perspectiva opens this mix:

The last track i found to include in this mix, as i was compiling the final tracklist, is from a brand new album by Richard Fearless (thanks for sending it Richard!). Future Rave Memory journeys into much deeper experimental/ambient territory compared to his previous work. The track Earth Tapes introduces the final section of the mix where the light comes up slowly, ending on a positive and hopeful note.

Last but not least i want to draw your attention to one of my personal favourite discoveries of 2021: 光淵 (Pool Of Light). Previously based in Shenyang, China, now based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Anton Bogdanov creates some of the most beautiful ambient / drone music i have heard in a while. I am still working my way through his extensive back catalogue and even though i included the track Modern Caveman from an album that was released this April, i would like to recommend listening to his brand new long player The Sheltering Sky, which is one of his most complex releases so far, wondeful stuff:

Although it’s not quite finished yet, we and i can already say that 2021 has been an unusual year, both for the world and for me in my own personal life. This mix tries to soundtrack this very particular time. Considering how quiet a year it was, i surprised myself that this new mix is comparatively loud ambient music (for me), it’s also quite uplifting in parts, even a little in your face. For me this is a reflection of hope and trust for a new start, let’s see what 2022 will bring.

I hope that you will enjoy listening to this mix and that for you, the listener, 2022 will be a good year. Until then (unless we bump into each other before…), best wishes and farewell from the painful end specularity.
