about this mix

Some of the things that have influenced me most in my life were: discovering COIL, receiving hand written letters from Balance as a teenager in the 1980‘s, listening to COIL for 35 years, collecting COIL vinyl, CDs, books and memorabilia, becoming friends with people that like COIL, getting COIL tattoos, experiencing COIL live, playing COIL in my dj sets, meeting some of COIL‘s friends and becoming their friend, seeing and feeling COIL and remembering COIL.

This is a mix of COIL musick only, containing some of my favourite tracks. Compiling this mix was no easy task and took me several weeks of going through mountains of material. I wanted to keep this mix under 3 hours long and so a lot of the 9 hour long shortlist of songs i selected didn‘t end up on the final recording i made. Who knows maybe one day there will be a second final aid kit with other favourites. Over the years my COIL listening has been sporadic and always in flux, some of the songs that were most important to me over the years do not feature here. Apart from the time constraints it is also a snapshot of how i like to hear COIL today and the list of my preferred songs is always changing. This mix is a selection spanning COIL’s entire period of creativity from here to here (1985) to going up (2005), it features many of COIL’s best known tracks alongside some rarer ones that maybe not every new follower has come across.

My first COIL record was the Panic/Tainted Love red vinyl 12“ which i bought in a World Of Music store in Hamburg in 1985. Having been a fan of Soft Cell and Ed Cobb’s song for a while was what made me buy it (i vividly remember the moment i first picked up the record from the shelf). Following this purchase i bought every COIL release i could get my hands on from then on. Entering COIL‘s moon phase of music in the late 1990’s was another pivotal moment for me as a fan. COIL‘s work had become more than just music and never left me again.

I think i have played at least one COIL or related song in every of my sets in the Halle am Berghain but this mix is no dj set, it‘s a personal selection of COIL songs to keep and listen to while walking, traveling and dreaming – musick as company for drunken, lonely evenings, a memory and a way through the woods. I hope this mix can also be an introduction for newer listeners to the myriad of different COIL releases, even though this is only a personal view that ignores many other facets of COIL that are all well worth exploring if you have found something to enjoy in this mix.
