Abul Mogard – Moving Sounds Mix
(Moving Sounds)

•
Every now and then you come across some music that simply melts inside your ears.
Abul Mogard’s own releases from the last couple of years have all been mesmerizing and in this mix he gives a (just under) two hour insight into some of his inspirations, all the more interesting as very little is known about the producer. A tale exists that Mogard is a Serbian factory worker in his sixties who took up ambient music making during his retirement, although this story is very likely a fabricated lie or fantasy to promote his music, it has given a particular savour to how Mogard’s music has been perceived. It has sparked all kinds of comparisons by music journalists writing about this enigmatic figure, ranging from references to post industrial romanticism to the loneliness of a life in isolation. The real identity of the artist behind the music remains unknown and live appearances have been incognito affairs with Mogard’s face being obscured behind smoke or even a mask.
Besides two unreleased Abul Mogard productions, this mix features mostly fairly current experimental sounds, artists such as Alessandro Cortini, CoH, Massimo Pupillo, Die Wilde Jagd, the list goes on… but also classics from Eliane Radigue and Ennio Morricone all feature, as does Nurse With Wound. It’s a great list of artists and clearly selected by someone who is not quite as isolated as we might have thought but who very clearly has his ears to the ground and takes a great interest in what’s going on in today’s ambient electronic music scene.
The entire mix is an absolute pleasure as it masterfully combines the extreme with the serene and although some of the sounds are quite challenging they inhabit a realm that is beautiful and inviting, dreamlike and comforting. A combination of impressive soundscapes, heavy on filters and treatments, and heavenly harmonics and melodies. The individual tracks selected combine into a single language and sit side by side as parts of one whole. A great feat to achieve such a singular vision over a two hour long mix, featuring so many different artists who all have very distinct personalities and bodies of work themselves.
As a result it’s very easy to lean back and listen to the mix from start to finish without realizing the time passing so quickly. Truly immersive, like so much of Abul Mogard’s own production work, a standout mix not to be missed!
